This piece is heavily influenced by my personal memories of Bill. The carving depicts the flowers of the pōhutukawa tree, which is deeply significant in Māori culture. One ancient tree at the northernmost tip of New Zealand is particularly sacred. Known as “the place of leaping,” it is where spirits of the dead begin their return journey to their ancestral homeland.
