Floral Vessel by Ronald E. Fleming, created in redwood burl, measuring 11 1/2” h x 9 1/2” did
Ron Fleming
(United States, born 1937)
Ron Fleming knew from childhood that he would be an artist and grew up watching his grandfather working in wood, while encouraging his desire to be an artist and understand creative and technical processes. Fleming began studying illustration and painting at eight years of age and completed his first commercial work at thirteen. The influence of the natural world came early as well, as Fleming was raised in the country and spent a great deal of time hiking and camping as a child. Fleming's first career was as a professional illustrator and designer, with agents in New York and San Francisco. This experience led to his unique approach to working in wood.
“Whether it be the falling leaves of autumn swirling into a frozen form, or a single flower bud unfolding in spring, each piece gives me an opportunity to make a statement about the never-ending rituals of nature's evolution. Each form in wood becomes a captured moment of its own existence and every vessel gives me a way to express my feelings about the things I see around me and to share these visions with others.”
