A segmented vessel form by Ray Allen, created in maple burl, birch & walnut , measuring 3 1/2” h x 5 3/4” did
Ray Allen (1930-2000)
Allen was a pioneer in the field of segmented woodturning. He earned his livelihood as a carpenter for nearly three decades before turning his first object. He built many of his tools, including a lathe, and designed and built all of his jigs. In 1988 Ray began developing a unique style of work which combined his talents in segmented woodturning with his love of early Southwest pottery designs.
“After thirty years in the construction business, I found I still had the desire to build something. My inspiration came from prehistoric and contemporary pottery and the elegant forms and intricate designs presented me with the challenge I needed.”
