Sadly I never met Bill in person but knew him by reputation, so I was delighted, humbled and slightly daunted to be asked to be a part of this tribute to him.
I chose a sandblasted maple burl vessel. I wanted to leave as much of the lovely soft surface that Bill had created, and use my signature colouring technique to show what was beneath the surface.
I cut a boundary groove to allow me to remove part of the surface. I used black, red and blue stains and six coats of lacquer to achieve the result that you see. A local silversmith fitted a 1 mm sterling silver band to both connect and separate Bill’s soft satin sandblasted texture with the smooth glossy depth of the colouring.
