Tommy Alvarez is a 15-year-old Hispanic glassblower. He started glass blowing just after turning 13 years old. He is an apprentice of Hayden MacRae, at Fascapple Glass, where he undergoes instruction from various experienced and talented glassblowers. He continues to work to improve his craft and learn a variety of skills from different mentors. Glass blowing is a dying artform in the world right now and there are very few remaining. With the declining amount of people involved in this art, by the year 2050 it is estimated there will be only a few hundred glassblowers in the world.

The vase Tommy has created uses a silver green color which is only made in one factory in the world located in Germany. This color holds interesting properties when used correctly. When a big blast of heat hits one part of the glass it will leave a beautiful silvery shine to the glass because the color contains silver. One of the other interesting properties of this glass is when the color is stretched some parts of the color will disperse and make a tint on the glass, while other times it will leave a large streak on the glass which gives it a more complicated and artistic look. Tommy was inspired by the Northern Lights in making this vase as he hoped to emulate the green lines that streak across the sky into his vase.
