The beauty of Bill Luce's round-bottom bowls has awed me since I was first introduced to his work in my early days as a turner. Bill was a master in determining perfect curve and proportions in his pieces. The woods he chose are native to the Pacific Northwest, and in many cases, it was wood that is not ordinarily used for woodturning. The simplicity of the wood accentuates the beauty of his turning. The piece I chose is oak that was turned green. It became oval as it dried. To me, the grain line suggested a path meandering around the bowl. I wanted to embellish the bowl with something that wouldn't detract from either the form nor the beauty of the wood. My piercing creates a path that encircles the bowl by simply following the natural grainlines.
