This sculpture is one of the fifty-five pieces in my current Extempore series. The title, which means “without premeditation,” reflects an intuitive process that I use to fabricate complex forms without designing them beforehand. Restricting myself to working in wood and completing each piece within one calendar workday challenges me to take risks and work spontaneously.
In this small sculpture I was striving for compositional and physical balance. The cantilevered 'head' counteracts and balances the spreading 'feet' of the form. I've been working a lot in steel lately and found myself imagining this gestural form on a much larger scale.
