I have attempted to balance selected design principles and concepts to produce an object that is pleasing and meaningful. Thus symmetry is balanced by asymmetry. Rough texture is balanced by fine texture. The oval based on the golden mean on one axis, with organic elements that resemble how a tree might grow. Viewed from the side the oval dish is deeper on one end, balancing the shallow longer end. The wood was selected to show uniform and smooth grain, and the off center burl shows a different kind of coexistence; one of harmony.

A fascination with creativity and design provides the motivation to produce new works. Jim’s works have been exhibited nationally and internationally. He has curated and co-curated several major exhibitions. He also curated a seminal book, Woodturning Masters Major Works by Leading Artists. He continues to mentor others at The Moscow Woodworker’s Collective in Moscow, Idaho.
