The vessel form is intriguing to me in that it is a common artifact of humanity, timeless and ubiquitous culturally. When these artifacts are discovered or unearthed, we learn much from societies of the past because of their particular form and unpretentious embellishment of cultural symbols, sacred icons and images that were important to them in their everyday lives. It seems natural to me to follow this path of creating work, through form and embellishment, that relates similarly but individually to my own experiences, relationships, beliefs and things that are personally significant.

J. Paul Fennell has been a woodturner for over 50 years. and has focused on the expressiveness of hollow forms since the late 1980’s. A member of the AAW since 1986, Paul has been a featured demonstrator at annual symposiums numerous times, a workshop teacher and a featured demonstrator for schools, local clubs and international conferences for many years. In 2023 Paul was the recipient of the AAW’s Professional Outreach Program Merit Award.

Paul's work has been featured in over 25 major woodturning books, magazines and exhibit catalogs. His work resides in major private collections nationally and internationally, and in several museum collections, which include the Smithsonian, Washington, DC; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; Detroit Institute of Arts; Minneapolis Institute of Arts; Cincinnati Art Museum; Museum of Art & Design, New York; the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh and the Peabody-Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts.
