The hollowed and delicately pierced cubic form appears to be balanced, but in its most unstable orientation—on a point of the form’s principal diagonal. Within the piece, however, there is a dichotomy of elements: the graceful lightness of the octagonal lattice patterns created by negative space, in opposition to the perceived visual weight of the color red. Both, with respect to the sculpture’s design, serve to enhance the notion of stability.

J. Paul Fennell has been a woodturner for over 53 years. and has focused on the expressiveness of hollow forms since the late 1980’s. A member of the AAW since 1986, Paul has been a featured demonstrator at annual symposiums numerous times, a workshop teacher and a featured demonstrator for schools, local clubs and international conferences for many years.
