Frank E. Cummings III, Untitled Lidded Vessel 1986, ivory, gold leaf, gold & rosewood, 4 1/2” h x 2 3/4” w x 2 1/2” d
Frank E. Cummings III (b. 1938) is an iconic figure in the fields of American studio furniture and woodturning. Cummings refers to himself (and prefers to be known as) an artist. Respected for his slow, careful, meticulous craftsmanship, he also designed furniture for a movie set. Born during the Great Depression in the Watts area of Los Angeles, he faced the challenges every African American encountered during the last half of the twentieth century, but overcame them, embraced the opportunities that came his way, and through hard work achieved his place in the pantheon of contemporary American artists.
Cummings is most known for his vessels formed on the lathe, then chiseled and sawed. He uses a variety of wood, gems and metals to create his works. He is a Professor of Fine Arts at California State University, Long Beach. He received his BA and MA from California State University, Long Beach. He also served as Associate Dean of the School of Arts at CSU Fullerton and has served as a consultant to the NEA and the State Department on Arts in America. His work has been exhibited nationwide and is in the collection of the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Institution and the White House Collection of American Craft.
