Tommy Alvarez is a 15-year-old Hispanic glassblower. He started glass blowing just after turning 13 years old. He is an apprentice of Hayden MacRae, at Fascapple Glass, where he undergoes instruction from various experienced and talented glassblowers. He continues to work to improve his craft and learn a variety of skills from different mentors. Glass blowing is a dying artform in the world right now and there are very few remaining. With the declining amount of people involved in this art, by the year 2050 it is estimated there will be only a few hundred glassblowers in the world.

This sculpture is one of his larger pieces and required both skill and physical strength to manage the weight of the glass. To get the wavy bowl to work Tommy needed to first create a normally shaped bowl and then increase the heat applied to the bowl. Then Tommy spun the glass rapidly so it opened into a quasi-plate. Tommy, subsequently, let it hang down forming a spectacular wavy effect on the bowl.
