What is the balance between safety and risk? I always remind myself that working with wood can result in design changes at any time, and that a piece is not precious until it is finished. For A Stitch in Time, I pushed the limits as far as I was able in terms of the material. It is always exciting when trying for that last cut, or when sandblasting a fragile material. I planned for potential disasters, not knowing what the result would be. Every step in the making was a balance between playing it safe and taking a risk.

My work is inspired by nature. I spent my academic career exploring the natural world of plants from the molecular, microscopic, and macroscopic level. My work has focused on the use of surface enhancements that employ botanical or other biological motifs. I view wood as a medium for exploration and not just a material that has a pretty grain pattern. My goal is to enhance the surface to a depth that transforms a form into a three-dimensional canvas that entices the viewer to explore and ponder how the piece might have been informed by nature.
